In global bulk freight logistics, shipping efficiency and warehouse utilization directly impact profit margins. When filled with powders or granular materials, standard round or U-panel Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBCs) naturally deform, bulging into cylindrical or rounded shapes.

This bulging phenomenon creates “dead space” inside standard shipping containers and storage racks, leading to higher freight costs per metric ton, unstable stacking, and potential cargo shifting during ocean transit.

To solve this challenge, Baffle Big Bags (commonly known as Q-Bags or Form-Stable Bulk Bags) were engineered. By integrating internal structural baffles, Q-Bags retain their compact, cubic shape after filling—unlocking significant logistical and financial advantages for bulk shippers.

How Does a Baffle Big Bag Work?

A standard bulk bag rounds out under the outward lateral pressure of its contents. A Baffle Bag incorporates four internal vertical fabric panels (baffles) stitched across the four interior corners.

These baffles feature precision-engineered flow ports (die-cut holes or breathable mesh) that allow materials to flow freely into the corners during filling, while physically constraining the outer walls from expanding outward.

The result is a self-supporting, neat cubic block that stays within its designated pallet footprint.

Key Advantages of Switching to Baffle Q-Bags

1. Maximize Sea Container & Truck Capacity (+20% to 30%)

Standard 20ft and 40ft ocean containers have rigid internal dimensions. Because standard bulk bags bulge beyond pallet perimeters, fewer bags can fit side-by-side without crushing or overhang.

2. Enhanced Stacking Stability and Warehouse Safety

Bulged cylindrical bags are prone to leaning, toppling, or creating uneven weight distribution when stacked in multi-tier warehouse racks.

3. Zero Pallet Overhang & Reduced Bag Abrasion

When conventional bags bulge over pallet edges, they become vulnerable to puncture by forklift tines, container walls, or adjacent pallets during handling.

4. Faster and Cleaner Discharge

Engineered internal flow ports ensure smooth, uniform material flow during discharge without bridging or dead-zone accumulation in the corners.

📊 Comparison: Standard Bulk Bags vs. Baffle Big Bags (Q-Bags)

Feature Standard FIBC (U-Panel / Circular) Baffle Big Bag (Q-Bag)

In modern industrial packaging, transporting fine dry bulk materials—such as chemical powders, pigments, starch, pharmaceuticals, and lithium battery materials—presents unique safety challenges. When powders are rapidly filled or discharged from Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBCs / Bulk Bags), static electricity naturally accumulates due to triboelectric charging.

In the presence of flammable gases, vapors, or combustible dust, an uncontrolled electrostatic discharge (spark) can lead to catastrophic explosions.

To eliminate these hazards, the international packaging industry classifies FIBCs into four distinct categories: Type A, Type B, Type C, and Type D. Understanding the differences between these types is critical for ensuring plant safety, regulatory compliance, and cargo security.

1. Type A FIBC: Standard Plain Bulk Bags

2. Type B FIBC: Low Breakdown Voltage Bags

3. Type C FIBC: Conductive / Groundable Bulk Bags

4. Type D FIBC: Dissipative “Static-Safe” Bulk Bags

📊 Quick Selection Guide: Type A vs. B vs. C vs. D FIBC

Feature Type A Type B Type C (Conductive) Type D (Dissipative)
Material Static Control None Low Breakdown Voltage (<6 kV) Interconnected Conductive Grid Static Dissipative Fibers
Grounding Required? No No YES (Mandatory) NO
Combustible Dust Atmosphere ❌ Unsafe ✅ Safe (MIE >3 mJ) ✅ Safe ✅ Safe
Flammable Gas / Vapor Atmosphere ❌ Unsafe ❌ Unsafe ✅ Safe (When Grounded) ✅ Safe
Common Applications Sand, gravel, minerals Sugar, flour, granular resin Chemical powders, pigments, battery raw materials Explosive powders, solvent-rich areas

Need Expert Advice on Bulk Bag Safety?

Choosing the correct FIBC specification protects your workers, your facility, and your product integrity.

The advantages of using Dry bulk liner are many, and the main advantages are:

1, Dry bulk liner simplifies the packaging of goods, a large number of savings in packaging costs.

2, reduce the loss of goods, improve the quality of freight. Since the container is a solid sealed box, after the package of goods, there is no loss of cargo, reducing the waste of material wealth, improve the economic and social benefits.

3, reduce operating costs, reduce transportation costs. Because of the high efficiency of container handling, Weather-free, improve the loading and unloading of ships and ports, thereby improving efficiency.

Although the use of Dry bulk liner with container transport to reduce Chen Ben and many other advantages, in actual use, some places do not have the conditions of loading and unloading, or the transport truck does not have the ability to load and unload. This makes the market there is a fixed selection limit, is bound to increase costs. How to solve such a problem? Here we need to introduce a suitable container unloading platform-gravity tilt discharge.

Based on the principle of self-gravity flow, a gravity inclined unloading platform is designed and built. Make 20 or 40 feet containers can be directly discharged from the container material. Containers can be dragged by the trailer on the container unloading platform, it can also be lifted by a crane to the container unloading platform. At present, the standard length of the unloading platform is 6-22 meters, which indicates the available length of the deck. The different products for the tilt angle requirements are not the same, there are four standard angles of inclination, the range of 0 ~ 65 °. The unloading platform is available in three different mounting modes: permanent placement, semi-mobile and fully mobile.

Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBC) or commonly referred to as bulk bags, offer users many different options when it comes to customizing specifications that fit specific filing requirements. The flexibility of design allows options such as stackable bags, non-sift seams and of course ability to dissipate electrostatically.

if there is no official standard classification, “Groundable Type D”, D+, Dplus or CD. IEC 61340-4-4 Ed. 2.0 & Ed. 3.0 do not permit FIBC to be labeled as D+, CD, etc. Only the official classifications, i.e. Type A, Type B, Type C or Type D can be indicated on FIBC labels. One FIBC cannot be simultaneously classed as more than one type. So, for example, classing FIBC as both Type C and Type D, or labeling as C/D etc. is not permitted by IEC 61340-4-4 Ed. 2.0 or Ed. 3.0.

Type B FIBCs are made from plain woven polypropylene fabrics that have a low breakdown voltage to prevent the occurrence of highly energetic propagating brush discharges that can ignite a dust-air mixture. Type B FIBCs cannot be considered antistatic because they do not have any mechanism for dissipating static electricity.

Used to safely transport dry, flammable powders
No flammable solvents or gases should be present around the bag.
Type C FIBCs are made from non-conductive polypropylene fabrics interwoven with conducting threads, normally sewn in a grid pattern, that connect the bag to ground via a grounding point. The connection to ground or earth during filling and discharging is critical to the safe use of Type C FIBCs. As with any manual operation, ensuring interconnection and grounding of Type C FIBCs is subject to human error.

DO NOT USE when ground connection is not present or has become damaged.
Type C FIBC Fabric

Type D FIBCs are made from antistatic and static dissipative fabrics designed to safely prevent the occurrence of incendiary sparks, brush discharges and propagating brush discharges without the need for a connection from the bulk bag to the ground. Type D FIBCs can be used to safely package combustible products and to handle products incombustible and flammable environments.
